Priest as Prophet: Priestly Participation in the Prophetic Ministry of Jesus

Product Overview

The priest’s sharing in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly ministry of Jesus is well known, but more attention needs to be paid to the full meaning of Jesus’s prophetic ministry in order to respond effectively to the challenges the Church is facing today, both in its engagement with the culture and in the challenges of internal purification.

About the Author

Ralph Martin holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Angelicum in Rome and currently serves as Director of Graduate Theology Programs in the New Evangelization at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in the Archdiocese of Detroit. He also serves as a Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, and the president of Renewal Ministries, a Catholic ministry devoted to evangelization and spiritual renewal. He is the author of the widely read book on the spiritual journey, The Fulfillment of All Desire, and other books and scholarly articles on missiology and dogmatic theology.

Praise for Priest as Prophet

In this concise and clear book, Dr. Ralph Martin has set forth a much-needed picture of Christ as prophet and calls priests and seminarians to rediscover and imitate this oft-neglected role of Christ today. Dr. Martin’s urgent call here should be required reading for seminarians and priests.

— Monsignor Charles Pope, Pastor, Holy Comforter, St. Cyprian Catholic Church, Washington, DC

This is an extraordinary document that needs to be read and implemented by all formators of priests. And every priest should read it to ignite the zeal for souls that belongs in their priestly hearts, hearts that belong to God and his people.

— Janet Smith, PhD, Retired Father Michael J. McGivney Chair in Life Issues, Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, Michigan

Priests who participate in Jesus’ prophetic ministry, like Jesus Himself, inevitably provoke opposition from some, even as they awaken faith in others. Perhaps because a certain institutional conservatism can incline bishops to worry about the former effect more than they rejoice about the latter, the priest’s prophetic role is often overlooked. Dr. Martin performs a signal service by reminding us of this essential aspect of priestly identity, and his forthright explication of what it involves—especially the responsibility to remind people that their eternal destiny is at stake in their response to Jesus—is itself prophetic.

— Father Peter Ryan, SJ, Professor of Theology, Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, Michigan

Zeal for this book consumed me

Posted by Blake Vajgrt on Dec 1st 2023

I work as parish catechist and have been entrusted with stewardship over the ministries in the prophetic office by my pastor. As a lay-collaborator with him, I see myself sharing in the call to prophetic witness. This book is an inspiring call to arms as well as a humble reminder what is at stake when we fail to preach the Gospel. I found it renewing in God's call for me to follow him in this ministry.
