The image of the Virgin Mary was miraculously imprinted on the tilma (or apron) of St. Juan Diego after Our Lady appeared to him on Tepeyac Hill in 1531. The image is rich in symbolism, including the stars on her dress sash, the moon, and the rays of sunlight surrounding the Blessed Mother reminiscent of the “woman clothed with the sun” of Revelations 12:1.
