Why Coffee of the Cross?
Coffee of the Cross is a nonprofit project of the Diocese of Matagalpa in conjunction with the Community of Franciscan Renewal Friars. Every bag of coffee helps the friars promote and maintain Apante, the “Mountain of Peace,” in Matagalpa, Nicaragua.
Shortly after the death of Pope St. John Paul II, the holy pontiff appeared in a dream to Sidney Pratt, blessing Apante and asking him to build a great cross around which people would gather to pray for peace. Pratt brought his vision to the friars, who have ministered in Matagalpa since 2008 with the poor, sick, prisoners, and young people. At first they were skeptical, but Pratt convinced them to take on the project and construction began on New Year’s Day, 2013.
Today, at the summit of Apante stands a 33-meter cross flanked by a 12-meter image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, reminding all that the victory of Christ over evil is the true fount of peace. The Holy Spirit attracts thousands from around the globe to follow the two-kilometer Stations of the Cross leading the top of Apante, where they pray for peace in their hearts, families, and world.
Coffee of the Cross is a delicious, satisfying way to support the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and the “Mountain of Peace”!
